The Sailing Rode is about local cruising adventures that help build our skills as we work toward the day that we can permanently cast off the lines and sail over the horizon. We will share the lessons we learn, the products we find to make cruising easier, and all our cruising adventures. We hope others will share their cruising experiences and we will share them on the site.
What is with spelling road wrong? For those new to sailing or boating. Rode is a nautical term for the anchor line, typically made of chain or nylon line or a combination of both. The rode is an extremely important piece of equipment on our boat as it is our secure lifeline when we anchor and we need to trust it to keep our boat in one place and away from solid objects.
We are trailer sailors, so the land road is also part of all our sailing trips. We can cover a lot of ground cruising the boat down the highway at 60mph! In case anyone forgets the nautical term, we also own TheSailingRoad.com domain. Either address will get you to this site. You can read all about our crew here…

Awesome website! Full of information and pictures! Love it!
Thanks Maggie! That means a lot coming from a fellow sailor. We need to go have a day on the Sunfish to refresh my childhood memories and I can write it up in a post.
Ken: it’s Neil here from Sailing in the Mediterranean podcast. You mentioned a website in a podcast last week with the folks from Monday never which lists the prices boats have sold for. I thought I heard it as boatsold.com but I must have got it wrong. Could you pass on the correct url when you have a moment? Thanks!
PS Keep up the good work…
Neil, The website is soldboats.com but it is only available to subscribers. A broker that has access can probably run any reports you need. A subscription is $416 a year. http://www.yachtworld.com/core/members/soldboatsMembership.jsp
Congrats again on Arcturus! She will be a great boat for you.
Thanks for listening! – Steve
Hi. Love your podcasts. I listen to several sailing podcasts and have noted a “theme” in the more entertaining ones. That is, boat size snobbery. How unfortunate it is that in a sport/ lifestyle that so promotes free thinking and being outside of the box, a person with a larger vessel is constantly ridiculed , much like the 4×4 driver. My 50′ Gulfstar is indeed large, heavy, slow and complicated. It also is safe, comfortable and versatile. The oddity is, all that seem to profess advanced knowledge and self superiority, also enjoy relating to their audiences their own desire for a larger boat. Rather juvenile, but our experience is that this is universal everywhere, whether it is boats, TV’s or body parts. Ever notice that? Keep it balanced, not everyone is foolish , ignorant or poor. Have a Happy New Year and good luck getting your new larger boat.
Randy, I don’t think people are ridiculing anyone with a big boat, they mostly just say you don’t need a big boat to enjoy cruising. That said, I think most people would like a bigger boat if they had the means to buy and maintain it. Some people avoid bigger boats as they are a handful for a small crew.
If we have ever come across with boat snobbery on the podcast, we apologize. We truly believe that everyone has their ideal boat and we do not want to be judgmental. Well, maybe I was a little judgmental on the Russian billionaire that built the worlds largest sailboat, but I would still like to go on a cruise to check it out. When I was a kid sailing in Michigan, the nicest boat in our marina was a Gulfstar. I am sure it is a very safe, comfortable boat. Thanks for listening and sending feedback!
Just found your website and started listening to your podcasts as I was working on my MacGregor 25…… just added gas shocks to help raise the pop top easier….. since then I have watched some of your videos…. well done!
I am planning on coming to Florida sometime this winter and cruising for about 3 weeks…… uncertain of my destination, your trips may end up being one of mine also……. right now my favorite trip may be the st. Johns River .,,….how do you think that would compare vs the Intercoastal Waterway I should tell you that at this time I am not sailing….. we are motoring only and using the boat to stay on….. sorry for the long-winded email
Jim Way. North Liberty, Indiana
Jim, Let us know when you come down this winter and we will try to meet up. The St. Johns is nice but the lower portion from Palatka south is the most scenic, north of Palatka is wide and channel is far from shore so it is a bit boring. We prefer the inter-coastal, Anna Maria Island to Ft. Myers is our favorite cruising grounds, really pretty water, lots of good anchorages and great coastal towns.
Steve & Brandy,
I enjoy listening to your podcasts on my way into work. Steve, wondering what part of Michigan you grew up in? I’m from Southeast area a few miles from Chesterfield/New Baltimore. I sail my boat on Lake St. Clair. You familiar with the area? Funny, I lived in Florida too. New Port Richie and Hudson. Loved it down there. Always had it in mind to sail up and down the gulf coast. One day I will. I work in Troy, MI and my company has an office in Orlando I can work out of anytime I’d like. I’ve been thinking about it more lately. Anyway, great listening to you. Love the site. Giving me idea’s as I’m in the process of building mine. I only have 2 blogs, my about page and about my boat page. LOL. It’s a slow process for me and I have so much to learn. Keep up the great work!!
~ Matt
Matt, Thanks for listening and reaching out to us. I grew up in Monroe, MI and sailed our of North Cape Yacht Club. I forgot about Lake St. Clair as I have been gone so long, it does not get the recognition like the other great lakes. Send us your blog link and we will check it out. Let us know if you get down to the Orlando office and we can try to meet up.
Steve,& Brandy,
Thanks for the reply. I took my ASA 101/103 in Aug, 2015. I decided to take my ASA Bareboat 104 out of Beachside sailing in Merritt Island out of Harbortown marina sometime in Feb/Mar. I just called this morning and waiting to hear back. My wife and I are planning a bareboat charter in Feb/2018 in Tortola. If all goes well, should be down there for about 2 weeks. So yes, would be great to meet up. My blog is http://www.getbusycruising.com. Be gentle… I’m just starting. LOL. Lake St. Clair is incredible for water sports. Too bad such a limited time. Monroe is about 70 miles. Love the town and a great place to spend time and boat. Take care. BTW… still catching up on my podcasts. Just listened to episode 10 w/ Carol & Ken. Great work. Getting better each episode.
Thank you for all the content you produce. We have a few things in common. One is our future desires to cruise the world (or somewhere) and our experience/benefit from the LLS. My daughter is a cancer survivor (her story at http://www.teamcallie.org) and we like yourselves work diligently to raise money for the LLS. My daughter will graduate high school in about 5 years and at that time my wife and myself will be heading out as liveaboards. Until then I will satisfy my desires with small trips, reading, and listening to podcasts like yours.
Congratulations to Brandy and yourself on being newlyweds and with your future sailing adventures. Maybe our paths will cross one day.
Just getting caught up, almost to December 2016. So, now that I’m at this spot you two can go on and continue with your podcast/vids.
Thanks.
